The Menu Movie Review: The Best Food Served with Blood

An original story plot with some decent twists and unexpected moments The Menu starts on a very high note, but its ending is not satisfying. One could argue that the entire premise and build-up were wasted, but it does provide a unique storyline. It revolves around high-class people and their love to explore and spend their money on expensive things that set them apart from ordinary people, but sometimes the new experience can bring you a bad moment in your life.

The Plot of The Menu

Tyler (Nicholas Hoult) booked two luxurious seats in an island restaurant where Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes) serves his most extraordinary dishes to his guests, Only a few people get the chance to eat them at the extraordinary price of $1,250 per person. Tyler planned to go with his girlfriend Margot (Anya Taylor-Joy). Margot was stunned and a little bit surprised that one dinner course could be so expensive, as she had never eaten one. On the other hand, Tyler, himself being a chef, was more excited than ever; it was a dream come true moment for him, and he was also a big fan of Chef Slowik and his procedure for preparing the dishes.

Chef Slowik has some rules for his multi-course dinners, as only 12 people are allowed to eat in one sitting. The other guests are, respectively, a famous food critic Lillian Bloom (Janet McTeer), along with her editor Ted (Paul Adelstein), a well-known actor named Movie Star (John Leguizamo), with his assistant Felicity (Aimee Carrero), A rich older man with his wife Richard (Reed Birney) and Anne (Judith Light), three friends, has some connection with the owner of the island, Bryce (Rob Yang), Soren (Arturo Castro), and Dave (Mark St. Cyr).

All guests are greeted warmly on the island, where Elsa (Hong Chau), the chef’s right hand, greets them and gives them a tour of the restaurant and where they store their food. Everything looks normal. As dining time approaches, there are some rules, like that you cannot converse when the chef is speaking, you have to eat the food even if you don’t want to, and you can’t use your phone while eating. The food quantity looks ridiculous to the guests; on the other hand, every guest has hidden something, and the secrets start to reveal themselves there. Tyler was supposed to join the island with Miss Westervelt but he joins the table with Margot.

The movie star has told his assistant that he knows Chef Slowik, but in reality, he has never met him, and there are many more secrets that hold real suspense that I will not want to spoil for you. It has some gruesome scenes and lots of blood, so I won’t recommend watching it with kids.

The movie looks like a psychological thriller from the start, but after the intermission, it becomes a survival movie where everyone runs for their own lives; the sudden change in the tonality of the moments doesn’t work properly for me, and the ending of a survival movie is cliché where only the protagonist survives the adventure. All the characters are very unique with their different personas, and Tyler’s character has not been utilised. His character has many questions, and none of them have been answered in this movie. If you have the “Triangle of Sadness” movie, then you can see the similarity, but for me, “Triangle of Sadness” is more perfect than “The Menu.” Both movies are satirical, and they give commentary about the rich and poor classes. In this movie, Margot is that character, and through her, we see how high-class people spend their money.

The cinematography of this movie is top-notch; you will like his aestheticism. Peter Deming did a good job with the cinematography. The set design of the restaurant looks impeccable, and all the actors deserve special mention, including Ralph Fiennes and Nicholas Hoult. Anya Taylor-Joy’s character feels overpowered, and she also survives the island just because of a real cheeseburger, which just doesn’t give satisfaction as a viewer, who is engaged throughout the movie.

The movie starts on a very high note, but it stumbles with the ending. I believe the creator of this movie should make a series of it as it has many subplots and the movie is unable to answer all the questions. If they make a series out of this movie, I would watch it.
