An anime film deals with past traumas and how bullying can ruin someone’s life; it also affects their thinking and how they are perceived by those around them. A Silent Voice is a beautifully made, realistic incident and the story of normal people, which can be true as the simplicity and character development are beautifully choreographed. Japanese anime (it is called anime in Japan, not animation) movies are very rich in content. They have covered every genre with this and even tried some experimental genres to enhance their source of entertainment.
Movies like ‘I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, ‘Your Name, and ‘Weathering with You’ also follow the same type of love story. In addition, some of the movies have supernatural elements to showcase new stories to their audience and take risks to provide better and more unique content to their audience, and it is worth their efforts as all the movies mentioned are great to watch, and they have also done a marvellous job at the box office. A Silent Voice revolves around the lives of Ishida Shaoya and Nishimiya Shoka. Nishimiya Shoka is a deaf girl who studies at the same school as Ishida Shaoya, who always teases and bothers Nishimiya for being a deaf girl. Nishimiya Shoka tries to be friends with Ishida Shaoya, but he always mocks her. One teacher tries to teach sign language to students so they can easily communicate with Nishimiya, but most of the students decline to learn the language. Day by day, Ishida’s bullying actions get out of hand. He started throwing her hearing aids again and again, which were expensive to afford, and he never let her study in class.
Nishimiya’s mom complained to the school authority about Nishimiya losing her hearing aid and getting bruises. In the classroom, when teachers asked about the incident, students started blaming Ishida despite being involved in the bullying that occurs in Nishimiya. Ishida’s mom has to repay the money to Nishimiya’s mom. After that incident, Nishimiya transferred to another school.
In high school, Ishida’s ex-friends told everyone that he is a bad guy, and he used to treat everyone ill; he even bullied a girl who couldn’t speak. It leads to everyone starting to hate Ishida, and no one wants to have any association with him. Ishida has had some suicidal thoughts, and he even attempted suicide, but somehow he manages to survive, and his mother got to know about all of this, and she made him promise that as of now he won’t try to commit suicide.
One day, Ishida met Nishimiya at a sign language centre. He started to make things right, apologise to her for his past events, and start spending time with her. Which has some highs and lows in the story that you will see in the movie. Further information will count as spoilers, as a lot of things happened after their friendship.
Naoko Yamada was influenced by the teenage lifestyle and how puberty makes them take some steps that they don’t have any reason to perform but that give them mirth for a moment but after that happiness it will haunt them. The teenage problems are vividly visible in the movie, and the art style of the movie is also inspired by the real locations of Japan. The animation style has some unique features, like marking a cross instead of faces, which highlights the issue of Ishida not communicating with those people, and how the mark changes over time, which showcases the development of his character.
Yamada tried to show as many features of a teenager as he could, for instance the communication problem, suicidal thoughts, relationship problems, personal problems, and the insecurity between each other. The real meaning of the official name of the movie, ‘Koe no Katachi’, is’ The Shape of Voice’. It shows that communication in any form holds the same value, whether verbal or written.
